Editorial review

A lush, cautionary story of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not each? After Basil Hallward paints a wonderful, young mancff0478#three9;s portrait, his subjectcff0478#three9;s frivolous wish that the picture modification and he stay the same comes real. Dorian graycff0478#three9;s picture grows elderly and corrupt even as he maintains to look contemporary and blameless. After he kills a tender woman, "as no doubt as though I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian gray is stunned to find no distinction in his vision or setting. "The roses don't seem to be less beautiful for all that. The birds sing just as luckily in my lawn."

As Hallward tries to make feel of his advent, his epigram-luckily family member Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the pleasant "once we are luckily we are at all times good, but if we are good we don't seem to be at all times luckily." but in spite of its many languorous pleasures, The image of Dorian gray is a less than excellent paintings. in comparison to the two (voyeuristic) older males, Dorian is a bore, and his seek for ever new sensations some distance less a laugh than the radicalcff0478#three9;s drawing-room discussions. even more oddly, the ethical message of the radical contradicts lots of Wildecff0478#three9;s intended targets, not least "no artist has moral sympathies. a moral sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." nonetheless, the glamour boy will get his just deserts. And Wilde, protecting Dorian gray, had it each ways: "All extra, as well as all renunciation, brings its personal punishmalest."
