Editorial review

"In a hollow within the ground there lived a hobbit. now not an unpleasant, dirty, wet hollow, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy odor, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hollow with not anything in it to sit down down on or to consume: it was a hobbit-hollow, and that implies comfort."

The hobbit-hollow in query belongs to one Bilbo Baggins, an upstanding member of a "little other folks, approximately part our height, and smaller than the bearded dwarves." he's, like most of his sort, neatly off, neatly fed, and absolute best pleased when sitting by way of his own fire with a pipe, a pitcher of excellent beer, and a meal to sit up for. undoubtedly this actual hobbit is the closing person one may expect to look result in on a dangerous journey; certainly, when Gandalf the gray stops by way of one morning, "on the lookout for any individual to proportion in an adventure," Baggins fervently wishes the wizard in other places. No such good fortune, alternatively; soon 13 fortune-in search of dwarves have arrived on the hobbitcff0478#three9;s doorstep searching for a burglar, and sooner than he may even grasp his hat or an umbrella, Bilbo Baggins is swept out his door and into a dangerous adventure.

The dwarvescff0478#three9; function is to go back to their ancestral home within the Lonely Mountains and reclaim a stolen fortune from the dragon Smaug. along the way in which, they and their reluctant spouse meet giant spidentificationers, opposed elves, ravening wolves--and, most perilous of all, a subterranean crconsumeure named Gollum from whom Bilbo wins a magical ring in a ridentificationdling contest. it's from this existence-or-dconsumeh sport in the dark that J.R.R. Tolkiencff0478#three9;s masterwork, The Lord of the Rings, may sooner or later spring. although The Hobbit is lighter in tone than the trilogy that follows, it has, like Bilbo Baggins himself, unexpected iron at its core. Doncff0478#three9;t be fooled by way of its fairy-story demeanor; this is very much a story for adults, although older children will enjoy it, too. by the point Bilbo returns to his comfy hobbit-hollow, he's a different person altogether, neatly primed for the larger adventures to come--and so is the reader. --Alix Wilber
